Philosophy

Lost in the Cellar was started by Inger Mattern in 2015 as a way to express the fruit that both she and her husband John Mattern farm since the founding of Split Rock Ranch in 2011. Their inspiration for growing terroir driven wines is exuded through their love of music and community. Lost in the Cellar strives to deliver wines of place, celebrated in times of joy.

Soil Is Life

As third generation farmers in Mendocino County John and Inger Mattern utilize Organic regenerative farming practices to produce well rounded fruit with ripe phenolic expression.

Viticulture

An average of 6,000 pounds per acre per year is lost from our farmlands to unnecessary tillage. At Split Rock we are doing our part to regenerate, feed and nurture our soil. Whether one grows broccoli or wine grapes, the soil is all that matters to grow a healthy plant. Regenerative soil and organic farming practices are of paramount importance to Inger and John. Great wine starts in the vine! Come by and hang out at the barn with us sometime! A bonfire with a glass of Lost in the Cellar, or a morning cup of coffee!
